Department of Community Medicine(PSM)

Department of Community Medicine aims to produce quality health professionals and community physicians. The department strives to protect and promote the health and well-being of the community.

The department imparts teaching and training of medical, para-medical, and nursing students for developing them as skilled health professionals, and adopt a comprehensive and holistic approach to address the health needs of the community.

The department envisages working through a multi-disciplinary approach by networking with other service delivery institutions of primary health care, voluntary organizations, and institutes of national importance.

The department plays important role in the field of public health in coordination with GOI and GOJ, like participation for Sub National Certification in NTEP, undertaking research on CoVID-19 Registry an ICMR project.

MIYCN activity combined GOJ and Alive & Thrive project, NID GOI, Child Nutrition MTC supervision, EVM GOI, Capacity building during CoVID-19 at the state and district level. In research and publication apart from regular evidence generation in form of publication in high impact journals.

The department plays an integral role by mentoring PIs and Co-PIs in various ongoing projects and publications. To cater to the community needs department has two outreach centers: - UHTC, caters to urban population & RHTC, caters rural population.

The department observes various Health Days; organizes CME and seminars in college. Within department seminar and journal club is a weekly activity.

Department imparts health education within the community through community participation.

Infrastructures, Facilities & Activities

1) Infrastructures

The department is equipped with all modern teaching facilities like audio visual aids, museum, demonstration room and library with area for symposium. The department has UHTC and RHTC. The UHTC at PHC sadar and RHTC at Govindpur catering more than 6 lakhs population.

2) Activities

The department has immunization OPD at hospital and at both peripheral centres. At periphery the department runs general as well as specialist OPD. Along with immunization we are providing nutritional and developmental counselling to mothers/ caregivers. The Covid-19 Vaccination centre is managed by the department.

3) Teaching & Training

The teaching of para-medical, CHO, nursing and medical undergraduate is regularly being done by the department. Faculties of the department are state consultant of IDSP, state trainer for CoVID-19, Death Coder Verbal Coding Trainer for District of Dhanbad, and trainer of NVHP.

4) Research & Publication

The department has over 37 International publications and 17 National publications.

5) Event

The department actively participates in various projects and programme of GOJ & GOI.NACO approved
🔹 Operational Research on Partners of HIV positive patients and factors behind it,
🔹 Sub National Certification in NTEP,
🔹 Undertaking research on A national CoVID-19 Registry
🔹 A multicentre prospective study an ICMR project, MIYCN activity combined GOJ and Alive & Thrive project, NID GOI, Child Nutrition MTC supervision, EVM GOI& others.

6) Achievements

Oral & Poster presentation on various National & International forums, Felicitation by district administration for assiduous work during CoVID period, Appreciation of work for managing and operating CoVID-19 vaccination centre, authored chapter in a book on ergonomics.​
